About
Independent energy guidance, with the math in plain sight
Smart Choice exists to answer one question honestly: will this upgrade actually lower my electric bill?
Why this site exists
Most energy advice online falls into two camps: vague listicles that never quantify anything, and affiliate pages that quantify everything wildly in the merchant's favour. Neither helps you decide whether a $14 bulb multipack or a $200 thermostat is the better next purchase.
Smart Choice publishes comparisons built from manufacturer-published specifications and standard energy arithmetic — watts, hours, kilowatt-hours and your own electricity rate. Where a figure depends on your situation, we give you a calculator instead of a headline.
We are reader-supported. Some product links earn a commission, which never changes what we recommend or what a comparison table says. Products with no affiliate relationship appear alongside those that have one.
Our editorial principles
Show the math
Every savings figure on this site comes with the formula and the inputs. If you change the rate or the hours, the number changes — and we show you how.
No invented proof
We do not publish stock testimonials, fake reviewer names or purchased ratings. Sample content is labelled as sample until real reader stories replace it.
Disclose everything
Affiliate relationships are disclosed on every page where a commissionable link appears, above the link — never buried in the footer.
Written for households
Practical guidance for renters and owners on a normal budget, not a lab report and not a hype cycle.
