Setting up smart LED bulbs and schedules that actually stick

Get bulbs onto Wi-Fi, group them by room and build the two or three schedules that do most of the work.

BeginnerAbout 25 minutes

What you’ll need

  • A 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network
  • The manufacturer's app
  • Your Wi-Fi password

Step by step

  1. 1

    Join the right Wi-Fi band

Most smart bulbs only connect to 2.4 GHz. If your router merges bands under one name, temporarily separate them or use the router's guest 2.4 GHz network during setup.

  2. 2

Pair one bulb at a time

Power the bulb on, follow the app's pairing flow, then rename it something you would actually say out loud — 'Kitchen Ceiling', not 'Bulb 3'.

  3. 3

    Group bulbs into rooms

Rooms and groups let one command or schedule control several bulbs, which is what makes automation feel effortless.

  4. 4

    Add a sunset-on, bedtime-off schedule

A sunset trigger plus a fixed off time covers most wasted lighting hours without you thinking about it again.

  5. 5

    Set a default brightness

Dimming to 60–70% in the evening cuts draw and is usually more comfortable than full output.

Energy-saving tips

  • Leave the wall switch on — a smart bulb cut off at the switch cannot receive schedules.
  • Use vacation randomisation when away instead of leaving a lamp burning all night.
  • Smart bulbs draw a small amount in standby, so keep them for rooms where scheduling genuinely saves hours.
