Using a DC ceiling fan to run your AC less

Correct rotation direction, the right speed, and how to pair a fan with a thermostat setback.

BeginnerAbout 15 minutes

What you’ll need

  • The fan remote or app
  • A step stool to reach the reverse switch

Step by step

  1. 1

    Set summer rotation

In summer the blades should turn counter-clockwise viewed from below, pushing air straight down to create a cooling breeze.

  2. 2

Raise the thermostat, not the fan speed

With the fan running, most people stay comfortable a couple of degrees warmer. That setback is where the saving comes from.

  3. 3

Switch to winter mode when heating

Reverse to clockwise at low speed to push warm air pooled at the ceiling gently back down the walls.

  4. 4

    Use the timer

Set an overnight timer so the fan stops after you are asleep rather than running until morning.

  5. 5

Turn it off when you leave

Fans cool people, not rooms. A fan running in an empty room is pure waste.

Energy-saving tips

  • Low speed on a DC motor uses far less than a high speed, and is usually quieter and pleasant enough.
  • Clean the blades seasonally — dust loading makes fans noisier and less effective.
  • Pair the fan with your thermostat schedule so both change at the same times of day.
