Reading a whole-home energy monitor like a pro

Step by step

  1. 1

    Have the clamps installed professionally

    Current transformer clamps go inside the electrical panel. This is work for a licensed electrician in almost every case.

    Enter your real cost per kWh

    Divide your bill total by the kWh used to get the all-in rate including delivery charges, and enter that figure.

    Label every circuit

    Walk the house switching things on and off while watching the live feed until each channel is correctly named.

    Establish a baseline

    Note the overnight floor — what the house draws with everyone asleep. That is your always-on load.

    Verify each upgrade

    After any change — LEDs, a thermostat schedule, a new fridge — compare the same week against the baseline.

Energy-saving tips

  • A rising overnight baseline usually means a failing appliance or a new always-on device.
  • Circuit-level data finds the waste that plug-in meters physically cannot reach: HVAC, water heater, oven.
  • Export monthly data so you can compare seasons rather than reacting to single days.
